Aloe Vera is a succulent, tropical plant that has been used for centuries to heal both externally and internally. Aloes are resistant to drought, taking in water very easily and losing moisture very slowly. It can be raised anywhere, and is often grown as a houseplant.
Its soothing, cooling, antiseptic and antifungal properties have made it a popular ingredient in many skin products. Its fame as a treatment for burns and scalds goes back to Alexander the Great, who used an island off Somalia for the sole purpose of growing and obtaining the “amazing wound-healing” plant. Aloe Vera relieves inflammation, soothes muscle spasm, purifies the blood and cleanses the liver. It can be applied to burns and sunburns, ringworm, infected cuts, acne, shingles, eczema, wrinkles, and areas of dry, itchy skin. For cosmetic purposes, the gel expressed from the spongy leaves of the plant can give skin a healthy glow.
